My Retirement Hat

9/14/2021

A Wearer of Many Hats
My Retirement Hat
In her book "Refuse to Choose!" Barbara Sher refers to some of us as scanners or, as she prefers to state, "individuals with multitalented brains," a person that has so many interests and passions that they can't choose just one.  After reading her book, I came to understand why I enjoy wearing so many different hats.
All of my hats fit me and my diverse interests very well.
My retirement hat is now my newest favorite hat!

What to do first? I started by tackling my endless list of home, garden, and other yet-to-be-started projects.  During the first few months, while painting, decluttering, and rearranging furniture, I put my creative and artistic hats back on and got to work. I prioritized my studio space, knowing it's my daily inspiration, and began to feel the freedom that can only be known when you finally hang up your lifetime of work hat for any other hat you feel like wearing.

I'm slowly getting reacquainted with my writing hat.  I'm working on several short stories for a book that I hope to launch by the beginning of next year and will be the first of a short stories series.

Retirement is the stage of life I have been looking forward to for a long while, and now that I'm here, I'm enjoying it to the fullest of my abilities while doing, learning, and "chilling" whenever the mood occurs.

NOTE: Putting on our retirement hat for some of us does not mean we need to stop wearing our Work at Home Hat or, it may even be a good time for others to try that new hat on for size.
This hat is essential in many ways; it will help keep your mind younger and sharper while keeping your body active and more energized.  Possibly shoo away boredom and help by keeping some of us more financially independent.  Do not let age hold you back from trying on new hats.

How to Transform Yourself from a Procrastinator to a Doer!

How to Transform Yourself from a Procrastinator to a Doer!

It’s so very easy to want to accomplish things and quite another to actually accomplish them. If you have a list as long as your arm and have procrastinated on every single item, there is something you can do to become a highly disciplined and motivated individual.
Really, you can do it.  Here’s how:

1. Create a habit of success. One of the easiest ways to transform yourself from a procrastinator to a doer is to feel the sweet touch of success. Once you have the bug, you’ll want to continue.
Start by setting small goals you know you can achieve.  An easy example is exercise.
Let’s say you have the goal to run 5K and yet you can’t seem to motivate yourself to put a single foot out the door, despite all the great running gear hanging in your closet with the tags still on. To establish the changes needed for a new habit of success, start with a smaller goal, say running for half a mile and walking the rest, or walking for ten minutes and running for five.
Right now, take a look at your most desired goal and think about how you can break it into smaller goals to create a habit of success.

2. Eliminate your excuses. “It’ll take too long.”  “It’ll be too hard.” “I might fail.”  “I’ll make someone mad.”  and the one I use more often than I want to admit “I’m too busy or I’m too tired.”
Sound familiar?  Behind every undone task and goal yet to be accomplished is a litany of excuses. What are yours?  Write them down. What do you hear yourself saying every time you think about getting started?  Take a good look at your excuses.  Are they really true? Now ask yourself what you have to gain from achieving your goals.

3. Reward yourself.  Give yourself something really good for achieving your goals, whatever they are.  This is a great way to motivate yourself in the beginning.  Whether your reward is a new pair of shoes or tickets to a show or sporting event you want to attend, it’ll help you take that first step - and the first step is often the hardest to take.  Once you’re on the track to success, the rest is easy.  The first step to any change is the hardest to take!

4. Create a plan.  Sometimes we procrastinate because we just don’t know where to start.  Planning how to achieve your goal helps you gain some control over the process and see where there might be potential hurdles. Additionally,  it’s action toward success so you sort of trick yourself into taking the first step.  When creating a plan, consider transforming tip #1 and create smaller, achievable goals.  Finally, don’t let the planning stage be your excuse to procrastinate further.  Once you have a plan, take action.

5. Find a role model.  There’s an expert, coach or role model for just about every industry, profession, or goal. Finding one can be the final push to help you find the motivation you need to be that highly motivated person dying to get out.  Who inspires you?

Transforming yourself from a procrastinator into a highly motivated doer is in your hands.  You’re the only one who can make the proper changes and take the steps required to get where you want to be - and guess what?  It's never too late to start and just remember you can do it!

Turning Ideas into Actionable Plans

Turning Ideas into Actionable Plans
Ideas are all around us, and nothing feels more exciting than coming up with a fantastic idea that you know will absolutely work. The difficult part for most, however, is taking these ideas and turning them into an actionable plan.
Here are 3 tips to help you get started:

1 - You have an idea - fantastic!
Now start writing an action plan to bring your idea into shape.
First write your main idea down and how this idea will work.
Then expand your plan with very small steps that you will need to take.
Having a very detailed action plan to follow makes the achieving process much easier.

2 - Ditch "fear."
So many people have wonderful ideas that never come into fruition because of fear.  Fear can really be a dirty word for many of us.  It can stop us from following our dreams and acting on our ideas.  Don’t let fear of failure stop you from making your ideas a success.

Remind yourself that in the big scheme of things you really don’t have a lot to lose.  What is the worst that could happen?  Don’t worry about the fear of what people will say because people may always have something to say.
Take pride in the fact that you have the strength to follow through on your dreams.  The reality is you get bonus points for even trying in the first place, so you really can’t go wrong.

3 - Take small steps.
There is nothing more frightening than looking into all the little niggling details of a business idea. So much to be done!

This isn’t to say you shouldn’t plan or research your idea, but be careful not to get hung up on all the small details.  You can research all the information you need when the time comes.  And anything you can’t do, you can hire others to do.

The trick here is to proceed with small steps.  Take each part of your business plan and take a few small action steps daily.  Don’t get too hung up on the big picture but simply keep moving forwards one step at a time.
Turning ideas into action can be difficult and even scary for some, but the rewards can be immense.
Start slowly and work your way up and you’ll soon be on your way to making your ideas into your dreams.

Writing Just To Write

Writing Just To Write

Thoughts on a piece of paper, writing with no rhyme or reason simply to get in the groove of writing is good practice.
Feeling the keys under my fingers while watching the letters become words, words become sentences, sentences soon to hopefully be paragraphs in the chapters of a new book.
Writing Hat is part of this Wearer of Many Hats, some of these Hats are adventurous, some serious, some colorful, and some even funny.
The Hats express their own feelings through the writer as words are typed, stories are told and experiences are lived and shared.

My latest Hat is as the manager of a mobile home park.  This Hat in itself can take on several different shapes, styles and colors depending on the moment, the event, the day and even the mood of the wearer.

Soon these typed thoughts, events and daily adventures became a second book in this writer’s life.
Well the soon really took a year span but none the less “Managing a Mobile Home Park and Living Amongst Its Characters” was finally published on August 30th.

A person can play many characters in a life span, thus the wearing of so many Hats.  Writing about these Hats, what you know and what you’ve learned so far, is a great way to share with others and leave a legacy.
