My Retirement Hat

9/14/2021

A Wearer of Many Hats
My Retirement Hat
In her book "Refuse to Choose!" Barbara Sher refers to some of us as scanners or, as she prefers to state, "individuals with multitalented brains," a person that has so many interests and passions that they can't choose just one.  After reading her book, I came to understand why I enjoy wearing so many different hats.
All of my hats fit me and my diverse interests very well.
My retirement hat is now my newest favorite hat!

What to do first? I started by tackling my endless list of home, garden, and other yet-to-be-started projects.  During the first few months, while painting, decluttering, and rearranging furniture, I put my creative and artistic hats back on and got to work. I prioritized my studio space, knowing it's my daily inspiration, and began to feel the freedom that can only be known when you finally hang up your lifetime of work hat for any other hat you feel like wearing.

I'm slowly getting reacquainted with my writing hat.  I'm working on several short stories for a book that I hope to launch by the beginning of next year and will be the first of a short stories series.

Retirement is the stage of life I have been looking forward to for a long while, and now that I'm here, I'm enjoying it to the fullest of my abilities while doing, learning, and "chilling" whenever the mood occurs.

NOTE: Putting on our retirement hat for some of us does not mean we need to stop wearing our Work at Home Hat or, it may even be a good time for others to try that new hat on for size.
This hat is essential in many ways; it will help keep your mind younger and sharper while keeping your body active and more energized.  Possibly shoo away boredom and help by keeping some of us more financially independent.  Do not let age hold you back from trying on new hats.

Being Busy

Busy Doing What?
Picture
It's real easy to keep busy, moving without really doing and we all do it from time to time.
But busy doing what?  Busy work of course, the kind of work that is used as an excuse to avoid doing what you should really be doing and in my case that would be writing.
I've tried to schedule in some writing time at my desk but lately it seems to be futile. It worked for me in the past but now I seem to do everything else but actually write.

So what does one need to do to get moving in the right direction?
The first question should be, is your chosen direction still the one you wish to follow?

In my case, I do want to keep writing more books and keep sharing them with others.
I recently started organizing all my thoughts and book ideas in a spiral note book and also made individual folders for each book title to keep all pertinent information and notes together for that book.

I moved my writing laptop to a different location in my studio hoping that this would inspire me to sit there and write.  So far it has not been the case, of course one needs to actually sit in the writing chair to get better motivated and make it happen.

With the warm weather coming I'll try to make it, no, I'll make it a point of taking myself to the library or the local coffee shop a few times a week.  I know I can quietly sit there and write without interruptions and where I will totally be away from any busy work that could possibly catch my eye.

How do you deal with your busy work?

Being a Character

Grumpy Character
Being a Character

Being a character does not mean that you are not being yourself on the contrary I believe that you are who you need to be at that moment to deal and cope with what is going on in your life.

Taken on a character is different than building your character traits.
Your character traits are who you are, who you wish to be, while being a character or taken on a character is more often than not a temporary stay.
Characters can be defined as: The combination of qualities or traits that distinguishes an individual's personality be it grumpy, eccentric or humorous just to name a few.

Where I work, being a character is almost a prerequisite.  Managing a mobile home park you do see and get to know all types of characters.  Some are more lovable than others but all come with their own life stories.

One particular individual comes to mind.  This person had been around a long time.  He had seen war and with age had also seen a lot of his family and friends come and go.

For years he wore the grumpy character, never smiled, never laughed and often complained for what seemed to be no apparent reason.

Through the years I learned to see past his grumpiness.  I also learned that at times he could be humorous and that there was an unassuming  generous quality about him.

We came to respect each other and I came to understand that his grumpy character was not really who he was but only a character he chose to use to protect himself for what life had dealt him in the pass.
We all have characters to deal with.
What are your hidden characters or character traits?

Excerpt from my newest book "Managing a Mobile Home Park and Living Amongst Its Characters"

Introducing Character in A Jar for Children

Build and reinforce positive character traits at home, in the classroom, after-school programs, youth groups, or wherever you interact with kids and teens.
Have children pick a character for the day,

“Patience,” “Compassion,” “Tolerance,” "Giving" and many more.
This can actually be a good gift for adults as well.

Writing Just To Write

Writing Just To Write

Thoughts on a piece of paper, writing with no rhyme or reason simply to get in the groove of writing is good practice.
Feeling the keys under my fingers while watching the letters become words, words become sentences, sentences soon to hopefully be paragraphs in the chapters of a new book.
Writing Hat is part of this Wearer of Many Hats, some of these Hats are adventurous, some serious, some colorful, and some even funny.
The Hats express their own feelings through the writer as words are typed, stories are told and experiences are lived and shared.

My latest Hat is as the manager of a mobile home park.  This Hat in itself can take on several different shapes, styles and colors depending on the moment, the event, the day and even the mood of the wearer.

Soon these typed thoughts, events and daily adventures became a second book in this writer’s life.
Well the soon really took a year span but none the less “Managing a Mobile Home Park and Living Amongst Its Characters” was finally published on August 30th.

A person can play many characters in a life span, thus the wearing of so many Hats.  Writing about these Hats, what you know and what you’ve learned so far, is a great way to share with others and leave a legacy.
