Lend an Ear

Life is full of obstacles. Some of the obstacles we face are small in nature and relatively easy to overcome.  Other obstacles can be more challenging and sometimes life changing. If you notice a friend struggling with an obstacle, make every effort to talk with her. Set up a lunch date, call on the phone, or stop by her house with some treats.
The person may not want to talk at all about her problems. In that case, carry on a regular conversation which might give this person the mental break she's looking for.

Or a friend may want to lighten her load by sharing the problem with you. If she does, activate your listening skills and don't try to solve the problem or tell them everything will be all right. After all, in some cases things might not be okay. Instead just listen and ask questions so you gain a better understanding of the situation. Offer a hug when appropriate.

Most importantly, never share a private conversation with others. It's not your place to share someone else's woes. Instead be the rock someone can lean on.

The Dash

The Dash

My daughter's Birthday would have been today.
Again I share with you "The Dash" as I do every year in her memory.

My daughter had a way of listening to your woes and would give advice with a humorous twist.
She enjoyed writing, music, movie trivia's, cooking and teasing her brothers with love and laughter.
She had a warm heart and a very kind and giving soul.
We were privileged and are very grateful to have had her in our lives for 31 years.

"The Dash" is for all who have lost a loved one or to remind ourselves to appreciate the people we love and how short and precious "The Dash" in life can really be.

Please take a moment to share this video with all the wonderful people in your life.

Being A Character

Grumpy Character
Being a Character

Being a character does not mean that you are not being yourself on the contrary I believe that you are who you need to be at that moment to deal and cope with what is going on in your life.
Taken on a character is different than building your character traits.
Your character traits are who you are, who you wish to be, while being a character or taken on a character is more often than not a temporary stay.
Characters can be defined as: The combination of qualities or traits that distinguishes an individual's personality be it grumpy, eccentric or humorous just to name a few.

Where I work, being a character is almost a prerequisite.  Managing a mobile home park you do see and get to know all types of characters.  Some are more lovable than others but all come with their own life stories.

One particular individual comes to mind.  This person had been around a long time.  He had seen war and with age had also seen a lot of his family and friends come and go.

For years he wore the grumpy character, never smiled, never laughed and often complained for what seemed to be no apparent reason.

Through the years I learned to see past his grumpiness.  I also learned that at times he could be humorous and that there was an unassuming  generous quality about him.

We came to respect each other and I came to understand that his grumpy character was not really who he was but only a character he chose to use to protect himself for what life had dealt him in the pass.
We all have characters to deal with.
What are your hidden characters or character traits?

This can actually be a good gift for adults as well.

Giving Hope With Kindness

Giving Hope With Kindness
Years ago I read an article that told an inspiring story of a young burn victim.  A teacher was asked to go to the hospital and help this badly burn young boy with his grammar lessons.
At the end of the session, she doubted herself as to having helped the boy.  The next day the hospital staff asked her what she had done to change the boy's response to healing.  This was a mystery to her but the lessons continued and the boy kept on making progress.

Two weeks later, the boy told some of the staff that when the teacher came to help him, he thought, "They wouldn't have sent a teacher to help me with my schoolwork if people thought I was dying."

We can slowly create the world we want with simple acts of kindness, these acts will at times give hope.  Look for qualities in others, talk and listen to them with kindness and refrain from assuming or judging.

But remember, first you must be kind to yourself.  Learn to take time to relax, take a walk and breathe in the beauty that surrounds you.  Being kind to you reaches to others.
"You can bring hope and healing to a troubled world: touch with
kindness, one step at a time."~ Ardath Rodale
